My reflection and review of the presentations- Gabriella Garcia
As we start with this presentation on chapter 3 I would like to point out the good things of this presentation. They gave very good examples and knew their information very well. I also liked that they did not read off of the powerpoint itself and elaborated on the information both on the slide and what they knew. One of my favorite parts was learning about cultural communication. This is because most of us are from two different cultures which can cause discourse in us since we may not fully identify with one culture or the other. It was also very interesting to talk about older and younger generations. Sometimes these generations can fight with each other because as time goes on things change. The older generation might see something such as sexuality and gender in a conservative way compared to the younger generation sees it in a more open view that would make the older generation appalled at what they think. Or the younger generation might see something such as racist or prejudiced as wrong compared to the older generation who thought nothing much of it. One of the other things that interested me a lot was the talk about dominant culture and the norms of society. This is very interesting because again most of us are from a non dominant culture that is seen in the United States. This would be mostly considered when we are out of Miami of course. But in other places of the U.S. or even places out of the U.S. such as Asia we are probably seen as the non dominant culture. This to us would give us culture shock which could or would give us discomfort in some way. The last thing I want to talk about is on a negative note. As much as I liked the presentation, the actual background and theme of the presentation was all over the place. I think they should have used some kind of template or worked it all out on one concise template. It all looked like it was put together at the last minute and no one thought to make it all look like it was part of the same powerpoint. In general it looked like it was all put up in cut and paste. That would be my only negative comment about group one because much of their information is very valuable.
As this is my group I will be a little biased. I liked that there was a theme throughout the presentation that made it look more professional and formal. Many of the videos and pictures used were from much of popular media and culture which I think are some of the best examples because since it is popular we are able to understand much better and faster what they are trying to explain. Many of the people explained their information very well and elaborated on their topics that some even took it farther. One of my favorite topics that was talked about in the presentation was on heterogeneous and homogeneous groups. That is because we ourselves are a group and so much of the information that we talked about could have applied to us. Back to the topic, it was very interesting to learn about homogeneous groups and heterogeneous groups because based on what a group is it could lead to two very different conclusions. A homogenous group would be very informative on just one subject but would not have much on anything outside of the subject. I would be one note. Then we have heterogeneous groups which could give a new perspective on a subject since each of the people could have different views. The different people could also give the presentation itself more than what a homogenous group that would stay in the same space. It was also very interesting to learn what would make a group best, especially when it is very important that a group works as best as it can for example in a job. To finish this I will again give a negative comment about the presentation. As much as there was good information and a lot of it, sometimes what people said was exactly what was one the power point. The powerpoints also had a lot of information on some of the slides that at times made it look crowded and not the best looking presentation. Overall great presentation with very interesting information that could apply to ourselves in what we are doing in this class.
Lastly we have chapter 10 with group 3. One of the things that I really liked off the bat was the agenda at the start of the presentation. This would be very helpful to a person when they need to find information quickly or if it was another powerpoint that was longer and had more information an agenda would make it like a table of contents that would help a lot of people when finding specific information. I also really enjoyed when they explained an effective meeting. This could be very important for us to know later in life if we work at a job that requires us to do a lot of meetings. It was also very helpful to learn how to make the most out of a meeting. This is especially very important to me and other people now since meetings and other informational topics are now online. For me this information is very helpful since I have college tours where they give a lot of information on the school. It is of course very important to me that I get all the information I need for both me to not be paranoid that I did not miss anything important and that I have all the information itself that I could use to apply. The last thing that I want to talk about is that they didn't really give that many pictures or videos as examples. Based on other presentations using pictures and videos from the media helped me understand the information a lot better. All in all they had a great informative presentation.
Very good. I don't know who wrote this.
