Reflection on chapters 3,9,10 presentations
Meylin Hano
Communication is the sending and receiving of information. It is an essential part of our daily lives. Without communication, life would be extremely confusing and so different in many ways. Throughout the years, I have heard “communication is key” more times than I can count. As cliché as that statement sounds, it holds so much truth. However, being told to communicate is easier said than done. Communicating is more than what we say and hear. It is also how we convey the information, when we convey it, and who we convey it to. Communication is also how we receive this information. There are many barriers such as tone, culture, connotation, etc. Communication is easier for some than for others. For example, I have trouble speaking out loud and in public, I become anxious. There is also other people that speak in public with ease. When I first saw that I had SPC 1017, I panicked a little because I really do not enjoy presenting in front of others. However, I believe this class is beneficial. I believe it can take people, such as myself, that have trouble with public speaking, out of our comfort zones. It is just like many other things, if we do not practice the things we lack experience or strength in, how will fortify these skills or qualities? I look forward to seeing how much this class helps my communication skills.
An Example of the Different Parts of Communication👇
For starters, group one’s presentation of chapter three starts off with culture. Culture plays a great role in communication. When we communicate with people from different cultures, there can be culture shocks. For example, things I might say or do that would be normal for my culture might be abnormal for other cultures or even disrespectful. This is why it is important to consider other people’s cultures and remain open minded/respectful when it comes to communicating with others. It may help to find similar values within our groups and teams in order to have a harmonious environment or group dynamic. We can do this while still having our differences and respecting them. I appreciate how it was included in the presentation that it is normal to feel discomfort when coming into a cultural setting that is unfamiliar with different norms and customs. I like that it was mentioned that not everyone has to be the same and that not everyone has to be different. I feel like that is an important factor in groups with cultural differences and saying something like that can probably bring a lot of ease to us and our peers. It is also interesting how different languages have certain words that can mean different things which can be offensive to others. Which is why we should remain open minded and take these things into consideration without immediately taking offense or also being mindful if someone does become offended. This is where communication would come in and we would try to come to an understanding. This just shows how it is important to educate ourselves and others. Overall, I really liked group one’s presentation. They listed some very crucial points of communication and explained everything thoroughly, I liked that they included many educational examples.
Cultural Barriers👇
What Cultural Barriers can look like 👇
Not to be biased but I think our group did an amazing job. Group two’s presentation on chapter nine started off talking about communication in groups. An interesting point that one of my group members brought up was unrelated family. I like the concept of that, forming a family with people who are not related by blood or marriage is extremely cool and I think it creates a strong bond in groups. I feel like these people do not feel forced to stick around solely because of the fact that they are related or married but simply because they have that loyalty and respect for each other, which I think is really special. I like how we listed and explained the different types of groups such as social groups, support groups, interest groups, service groups, virtual groups, and work groups. It explains and labels the differences between certain groups and the type of dynamics in those groups. I also enjoyed seeing the Ringelmann Effect and how five people are the perfect amount for work groups, it was something that I was not aware of before. Our group also spoke about what makes effective work groups such as all working together towards the same goal which is an amazing point. This chapter had very efficient tips as to how to maintain and achieve healthy group dynamics. Our team did a great job in listing examples and elaborating. I liked the visual parts of the PowerPoint as well such the pictures and graphs. The pictures really helped bring the presentation together and paint a better picture making things easier to understand. I also spoke about healthy and productive norms which we applied in real life to our group in order to have a successful group presentation. We helped each other out efficiently. For example, one of my peers and I shared leadership and offered help and guidance to whoever needed it because that is the role we were playing for our group and we stuck to it. I think it is extremely important for everyone to do their part in groups for everything to work competently like gears. I also enjoyed the listing of different conflicts in groups which I think gives a better understanding of why conflict occurs. Overall, the presentation was straight to the point and organized. We still kept our presentation flowing smoothly even if one of our members did not do their part.
Common Team Norms👇
Lastly, group three’s presentation on chapter 10 started off with the types of task roles. I like how it describes the diverse types of people and their tasks. I think these labels can help understand peoples role’s in groups. The maintenance roles are also a good point that was brought up. These types of roles help maintain groups harmonious which is substantial. I really loved the structure of this PowerPoint, it was very organized and informational. The group members were super well spoken which is enjoyable. I enjoyed the video example of The Office. It kept the presentation interesting and comedic while putting things into perspective so that we can all understand better. The meeting factors that were mentioned such as how to have a successful meeting were great pointers. I feel like this gives us quality insight on how to have productive meetings. The problem solving tactics are also key because problems are bound to arise and they need to be handled correctly. Overall, I was really fond of the points/ideas that were brought up in this chapter, they help provide the fundamental principles of how to work together in tune.

Successful Meetings Tips 👇
In conclusion, I think all of us did an amazing job aside from the technical difficulties and I loved how we all did our part and put the effort necessary to have productive and successful presentations. I was not expecting for us to perform so well considering it is a bit more difficult to do these presentations virtually due to the technical issues and occasional awkwardness. I am proud of the work we all did and I hope we get even better in this class, which I am sure is what will happen. The group leaders also did an astounding job in explaining and summarizing all of the chapters. They were also extremely helpful and knowledgeable. 💞
