Blog 2 Group Presentation Luis Contreras SPC1017

 Luis Contreras

There are so many controversial topics nowadays. For my SPC class, we were divided into groups and were given the task of researching some of these topics. All the groups had a couple of weeks to do their research. Once that time was up it was time to present. The order in which we were to present was Group Three first, Group Two second, and lastly Group One. Since Group Three was the first to present let's talk about them first.

Group 3 was given the topics of Free Healthcare and Changes in Healthcare Policies. For a long time, free healthcare has been a controversial topic. It doesn’t matter whether you’re in favor or against it. There are benefits to having free healthcare. Group three talked about all the benefits and downsides of it. Some of the benefits of free healthcare would be the prevention of yearly deaths. “A study conducted by Harvard researchers states that not having healthcare causes around 44,789 deaths yearly.” This was stated by Rudy Romero on one of the first slides of the presentation. It was good that he talked about this in the presentation, it shows how not having free healthcare is affecting the people of the United States. It doesn’t matter what political party you’re a part of what matters is what you do to help solve this issue. So many lives could be saved if we all had healthcare. Some downsides are that having free healthcare is the tax increase that comes with it. It has been estimated that there will be a 20% tax increase. The tax increase isn’t the only thing that will increase wait times for specialists will also increase. Having free healthcare won’t have much effect if when you need to see your specialist the wait time is longer than the time you have.

Next to present was Group Two, my group. Our presentation was on Law and Order with Immigration. We mostly focused on immigration laws and how immigration is affecting the country as a whole. Since elections were coming up voting was on all of the voter's minds. We talked about how immigrants coming into the country are being treated. Immigrants are not being treated fairly at all. Republicans have a part to play in this. These republicans have been filling immigrants with false hope by basically shipping them like cargo to the east coast with the promise of a new home and better opportunities for them and their families. In the minds of republicans shipping, immigrants to blue states are their way of seeing how democrats will like immigrants coming into their cities. They don’t even see them as people. In our state of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis sent a group of Venezuelan immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard leaving them defenseless. Thankfully they were taken in and given the help they needed. Another important issue we talked about what border control and the safety of the border. The way the Border is talked about is complete garbage. Politicians talk about how our borders are secure and safe when they aren’t. If our borders were really secure we wouldn’t have such a large amount of immigration happening. In reality cities near the border are the ones suffering. In the past years, these towns and cities have been worried about whether or not they have the resources to maintain themselves and those who may come and stay alive. They hope that the immigrants keep going to larger cities where they will have better opportunities. Bigger cities have more resources to provide for the ones who already live there and those who migrate there. One of the major things that impacted me while researching was how kids are being separated from their parents. There is no need to do that, once they are finally reunited there's a chance for the child to not recognize their own mother or father due to how long they’ve been separated for.

Last but most certainly not least is Group One. Their presentation was on Racial Divide and The Economy. Group One started by talking about Miami’s Economy. The main point in this slide was what makes up Miami’s Economy, mainly consisting of tourism and trade. In the year 2019 Tourism made 19.2 billion dollars. That’s a crazy amount that comes to show how impactful outside sources can be to a community. The outside source is tourists from all around the world. Yearly we make 43 billion dollars from trading. Exporting our goods is amazing because it basically promotes certain things that we have that other places may not, and in the end, this brings more trading opportunities. Miami also has its downsides. One of those is the housing crisis.  Rent is at an all-time high. Most people are struggling to pay for housing because of their jobs. Yes, some jobs pay a living wage but that means nothing if paying for housing is more expensive than what you make monthly. Next up we have Racial Injustice in America. There's clearly a divide and everyone can see it. Being white may excuse you from this but being a person of color makes it worse. For example, White Americans are facing an average homicide rate of 2.5 deaths per 100,000 individuals, while African Americans face an average homicide rate of 19.4 deaths per 100,000 individuals. This is an issue that Americans as a whole need to help stop. We live in a country where the words “Liberty and freedom for all”, are starting to lose meaning. We should all be treated as equals no matter race, ethnicity, sexuality, and gender.

In conclusion, all of us did amazing on our presentations. All our topics were amazingly explained and researched to the fullest. I am a little biased toward my team but that’s natural after all I've been working with these amazing people for months now. I am looking forward to our next assignment together. Writing about all that we’ve researched makes me truly understand each topic. It helps me reflect on everything that we’ve talked about.
